Colinsburgh is a town in the Scottish Council Area Fife . It is located about twelve kilometers south of St Andrews and 22 kilometers northeast of Kirkcaldy in the East Neuk region .
history
Colinsburgh's history is closely linked to the nearby Balcarres estate, owned by the Lindsay clan . Built there mansion Balcarres House was the ancestral home of the Earls of Balcarres . Colin Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Balcarres (1652-1722) had the Colinsburgh named after him built in 1705 as a planned settlement . It was intended to serve as the home of retired soldiers. To the northwest, the Villa Charleton House was built around 50 years later .
Between 1841 and 1881 Colinsburgh's population fell from 482 to 382. After 425 inhabitants were recorded in 1961, in 2001 only 371 people lived in the village.
