Earl of Balcarres is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

The family seat is Balcarres House near Colinsburgh in County Fife, Scotland .

Award, subordinate and other titles

The title was created on January 9, 1651 for Alexander Lindsay . Together with the Earldom he was given the subordinate title Lord Lindsay and Balniel . From his father he had inherited the title of Lord Lindsay of Balcarres in 1642 , which was awarded to him on June 27, 1633.

The 6th Earl has been entitled to the title of Earl of Crawford since the death of his distant relative, George Lindsay-Crawford, 22nd Earl of Crawford in 1808 . It was not until his son, the 7th Earl, that he was officially awarded the title in 1848. The two earldoms have since been united.

The heir ( Heir Apparent ) is the son of the current Earl, Anthony Robert Lindsay, Lord Balniel (* 1958).
His Heir Apparent is his son, Alexander Thomas Lindsay, Master of Lindsay (* 1991).
