history
Due to the geographical proximity to the Antonine Wall , the site of today's Stenhousemuir was settled at least since the time of the Roman occupation of Great Britain. There was a Roman temple called Arthur's O'On , but it was destroyed in 1743 because the stones were needed to build a new dam on the Carron . At that time the Stenhouse lands were owned by Clan Bruce . The city developed around a mansion belonging to the clan during this period, which was demolished in the 1960s.
In the 18th century in the course of industrialization , Stenhousemuir grew rapidly. In 1759, the Carron Iron Works was established as an ironworks . In addition, important cattle markets were held in the city until the 19th century. A golf course now occupies this area. In 2008 public funding of £ 15 million was made available for the renovation of the city center with public spaces, a library and sports facilities. In 2001 there were 10,049 people in Stenhousemuir.
