Gabriele Fischer (2012)

Gabriele Fischer (born October 31, 1968 in Lienz ) is a Tyrolean politician for the Greens . She was a member of the Tyrolean state parliament from 2013 to March 28, 2018 and has been a member of the Platter III state government since March 28, 2018 .

Fischer has been involved in the health sector since 1999 and uncovered several scandals at the Innsbruck clinic. Because of these disputes with the Tyrolean state hospitals (then: TILAK, today: Tyrol Kliniken), she gained national fame in Austria.

Professional background

Gabriele Fischer completed her school education in 1987 with the Matura at the Bundesgymnasium Lienz. In 1997 she finished her studies in landscape planning and landscape design at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna . Fischer wrote her diploma thesis on the topic: "Evaluation of the instrument 'landscape conservation plan' in Tyrol ".

Since 2009 she has been working as a freelance landscape planner in Tyrol . Fischer's political career came through her voluntary work.

voluntary work

Since 1999, Gabriele Fischer has been involved as a spokesperson for a platform she founded "Parents 'initiatives and self-help groups for special and sick children" (known as the "Parents' Association Children's Clinic") to promote better concepts, more transparency and openness in the facilities of TILAK (today: Tirol Kliniken). The central concern of Fischer was the careful handling of sick children. Based on this concern, she founded this platform. For the first time in the state of Tyrol, those affected (parents and patients) were able to articulate their suggestions, wishes and complaints. The platform helped to demand rights and thus actively participated in Tyrolean health policy. Fischer created political pressure on the state government and the Innsbruck clinic through high-profile disclosures. A central requirement was an active say in health policy matters and the introduction of error management based on the "Harvard Consensus Paper". In addition, this platform saw itself as an information point for all patients who had not found their way around the healthcare system on their own.

Uncovering the scandals surrounding the facilities of TILAK (today: Tirol Kliniken)

Gabriele Fischer achieved national fame even before she moved into the Tyrolean state parliament by publicizing several scandals in the Tilak facilities. In particular, her revelations about the tragic case of Nadina (severely disabled after groin surgery) and the deaths of Azra (3 years, died after surgery with a controversial indication) and Amel (3 years, died after constipation) made headlines across the Austrian media landscape.

Fischer was criticized by political decision-makers in Tyrol, as well as by the management of Tilak (today: Tirol Kliniken) for their high-profile revelations.

Both the Tyrolean legislature ( Tyrolean Landtag ) and the management of the Innsbruck Clinic were forced to act due to media pressure. The clinic admitted staff shortages, which led to a unanimous decision in the Tyrolean state parliament for more staff. In addition, the use of the narcotic propofol was banned after severe criticism.

Awards

In the course of her voluntary work, Gabriele Fischer received the Lilie Woman Award 2012 for her “committed and self-sacrificing commitment”.
