The Stenhouse and Carron Parish Church , formerly McLaren Memorial Church or Stenhouse Parish Church , is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Stenhousemuir in the Council Area of Falkirk . In 1987 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. The church is still in use as such.

history

As part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the service of Rev. John McLaren , who presided over the Parish Larbert and Dunipace , it was decided to build a new church to take into account the increasing population in the east of the Parish. The landowner George Sherriff of Stenhouse and Carronvale provided the church with an area to build the new house. The church was built between 1897 and 1899 to a design by the eminent architect John James Burnet and was initially called McLaren Memorial Church . The total cost was around £ 6,000. In 1904 the church was named the parish church of the newly formed Parish Stenhouse and was named Stenhouse Parish Church until 1963 . This year the parish merged with the neighboring Parish Carron to form Stenhouse and Carron Parish , whereupon the name of the church was adjusted accordingly.

description

Stenhouse and Carron Parish Church is in the center of Stenhousemuir at the intersection of Church Street and Sherriff Lane . Stylistically, the church exhibits motifs from various architectural currents, including Gothic and Romanesque architecture and the Arts and Crafts movement . The Romanesque details in particular are partly from a revision in the years 1905 to 1907. The square bell tower rises to the west. It is equipped with two arched windows on each side of the building. A parapet cantilevered over it with indicated watch towers . It ends with a pyramid roof . On the southwest side the stairwell emerges in a semi-octagonal fashion. The windows along the adjacent nave are arranged on five vertical axes. With the exception of the first axis, there are twin pointed arch windows. Like the edges of the building, all openings are set off with red sandstone . The facades are plastered with Harl .
