DocStop is a health project to improve medical on-the-go care for professional drivers in commercial road haulage , particularly along the European motorway network, and was founded in 2007 as the DocStop European Association.

The association wants to make a contribution to greater road safety and the creation of a humanitarian job through better medical care for truck drivers and professional drivers in the transport industry. According to a survey among DocStop doctors, around 4,000 professional drivers (BKF) or long-distance drivers turn to one of the 700 doctors in Germany every year in order to be treated for health problems en route. In Austria there is also a DocStop organization with around 80 doctors and around 30 contact points. In Denmark there are seven doctors at four DocStop info points. In addition, the association maintains contacts in Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary.

functionality

The sick professional drivers who are on the road in long-distance traffic report to a free, Europe-wide standardized DocStop service hotline. There you can get information about the doctor closest to your location and a truck parking lot nearby. The medical care point (doctor's practice, hospital) is usually no further than four kilometers from the point of contact and “minor” complaints such as toothache, constant headache or sudden back pain are also treated. Doctors consider all of these symptoms to be the occupational diseases of truck drivers.

aims

The aim of the humanitarian project is, among other things, to prevent traffic accidents that are caused by self-medication or driving with impaired health. A nationwide survey of the initiators among 800 professional drivers showed that almost 85% of those questioned complained about inadequate medical care at the workplace.

The truck drivers should be helped as soon as possible in the illness situation, this includes the treatment of frequently occurring complaints as well as serious illnesses. DocStop also advocates simple and unbureaucratic medical care to counteract the uncontrolled intake of over-the- counter medication .

The initiative creates humanitarian conditions in the workplace. In addition, is traffic safety increased by avoiding accidents with serious consequences to a large extent both the truck driver and for other road users.

development

The association developed from the pilot project “Healthy on the move” on April 19, 2007 by the initiator and European representative for road safety, Rainer Bernickel , PHK i. R.

On July 11, 2007, the initiative started at the Lomo service station on the A4 motorway in Eisenach . Since then, around 700 doctors and hospitals have participated in DocStop. Around 700 general practitioners, dentists and gynecologists already support the charitable work along the Trans-European Networks and help around 400 truck drivers every month who suffer from pain or symptoms of illness in long-distance freight transport .

A European model is to follow from the pilot project on German soil, which has meanwhile been well received, so that a medical supply network is created throughout Europe. The project is welcomed by many celebrities and is supported by many well-known companies in the traffic and transportation sector.

In 2014, the association's chairman Joachim Fehrenkötter and DocStop initiator Rainer Bernickel received the "Leo" award from DVV-Verlag as Person of the Year for their voluntary commitment to DocStop.
