The Sabugal dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Sabugal or Barragem de Nossa Senhora da Graça ) is located in the Central Portugal region in the Guarda district . It dams the Côa , a left (southern) tributary of the Douro to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem da Sabugal ). The eponymous city of Sabugal is located approx. 500 meters north of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1994. The construction was completed in 2000. In addition to irrigation, the dam also provides drinking water. It is owned by the DGADR .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 58.5 m above the foundation level (56.5 m above the river bed). The top of the dam is at a height of 794 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 1,005 m and its width 7 m. The volume of the dam is 1.894 million m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 28.3 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 182 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 569 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 1,000 years.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 790 m (maximum 791.81 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 7.32 km² and holds 114.3 million m³ of water - of which 10.4 million m³ can be used. The minimum congestion target is 774 m.
