Blantyre in Scotland is a town in the county of South Lanarkshire 15 km southeast of Glasgow with a population of around 17,500.
The Scottish missionary and Africa explorer David Livingstone was born in Blantyre ; The city of the same name in Malawi owes its name to this fact .
Brian Connolly, the lead singer of the British glam rock band The Sweet , who was popular in the 1970s , was also born here. The first US Secretary of Labor , William B. Wilson , and Salvation Army General John Gowans also come from Blantyre .
On October 22, 1877, 215 people died in the Blantyre coal mine.
