history
In 1242 the lands came into the possession of Walter de Moravia (also Walter Moray ). Before the start of the Scottish Wars of Independence in 1296, the germ cell of Bothwell Castle was located at the politically and strategically important location. Over the centuries the castle was destroyed and besieged several times. After a rebuilding in 1336, Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas , arranged for Bothwell Castle to be rebuilt in 1362. In the hands of the black line of Clan Douglas , the fortifications were expanded in 1455. In 1492 it passed to the Douglas' red line.
In the meantime, already in ruins, the Earl of Forfar received the castle in the 17th century. He used the stone material to build a mansion . After the lands came into the possession of the Home clan in the 19th century , the ruins finally fell to the state in the following century.
