Georges Paul Leroux
Georges Paul Leroux (born August 3, 1877 in Paris , † February 16, 1957 in Meudon ) was a French painter.
Life
Georges Paul Leroux studied with Léon Bonnat in Paris . In addition to landscape and history paintings, he also created illustrations, for example for the books by Anatole France . He also designed a poster for the 1900 World's Fair that pointed to a large telescope. From 1901 he participated regularly in the exhibitions in the Salon des Artistes Français; In 1903 and 1911 he was awarded medals. In 1906 he won the Grand Prix de Rome, which earned him a stay of several years in the Villa Medici in Rome and in 1913 led to an exhibition with around 70 landscape paintings from Italy in the Devambez Gallery.
Georges Leroux fought on the front lines during the First World War , which greatly influenced his art. The frieze Le Dernier Communiqué , now in the Petit Palais in Paris, and another similar work that is in the Musée National du Château de Versailles, as well as the painting Enfer in the Imperial War Museum are examples of this creative phase.
In 1920 he won the Prix Henner. Leroux later received orders for wall paintings with which the ocean liners Paris , Normandie and Ville d'Alger were decorated. He also created paintings for public buildings.
In 1926 he became a Knight of the Legion of Honor and in 1932 a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts . His grave in the Jouy-en-Josas cemetery was adorned with a bronze relief showing his portrait.
Works
Leroux's works can be found in the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, the Musée de Dijon, the Musée de Tours, the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and the Imperial War Museum in London. 14 paintings by Leroux belong to the holdings of the Musée Départemental de l'Oise in Beauvais .
