The Nonnendamm Bridge is a road bridge completed in 2003 over a lock canal of the Spree in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf . It leads from the district of Charlottenburg-Nord to an island in the Spree, which was created between 1998 and 2003 through the construction of a new lock chamber for the Charlottenburg lock . Without the construction of the bridge, the eastern section of Nonnendamm, where the Nonnendamm studio and several allotment gardens are located, would no longer have been accessible by vehicles.

history

The name of the bridge is reminiscent of one of the oldest trade routes from Berlin to Spandau . The Benedictine convent Spandau , founded in 1239, had large forest areas on both sides of the trade route, which was laid out as a stick dam and had been called Nonnendamm since the 13th century.

After the Reformation in the 16th century, the city of Berlin expanded into the surrounding area. The simultaneous merging with Spandau led to the creation of new settlement areas, with which the former possessions of the Benedictine nuns disappeared. The Nonnendamm was relocated on a raised embankment and remains recognizable in the cityscape with the construction of the new road bridge. The bridge built over the new Spree lock canal is a completely unadorned concrete girder bridge with large land abutments. It was built as part of the German Unity Transport Project No. 17 , in which the Charlottenburg lock was deepened and enlarged until 2003. The bridge has one lane in each direction.

Until a few years ago, an S-Bahn line crossed the Spree around 280 meters downstream from the Nonnendamm Bridge . The southern section of the two-span iron truss bridge built for this purpose was demolished as part of a straightening of the Spree. The northern section of the bridge, which leads over an oxbow lake, is still standing and can be seen from Nonnendamm.
