The Abbey Bridge is located between Treptower Park and an island in the Spree. The park and island were expanded and raised in preparation for the Berlin trade fair in 1896. The island, initially called "Treptower Bruch", was named Abbey Island after the opening of an excursion restaurant designed as a Scottish monastery ruin ("Abbey") . Because the Gasthaus Abtei burned down in 1914 and its remains were removed, the Viennese architect and civil engineer Friedrich von Emperger was able to plan a reinforced concrete bridge with a spacious bridge house on behalf of the then city of Neukölln as the owner of the island.

The bridge, built in a large arch without a river pillar, was made for the first time from concrete-encased cast iron with a diameter of 17 cm. Individual pipes with a length of 2 m were used, which were connected with the help of sleeves . So far there have been no building regulations for the installation of these elements, so that extensive fracture tests were carried out at the technical universities in Berlin and Dresden from December 1915 to March 1916, until an exemption was finally granted on March 23, 1916. Two arches clamped on both sides were created, which were connected to each other by a reinforced concrete slab and clamped to both abutments. The two bridge towers absorb part of the arch forces. For these buildings, the architect chose stylistic elements of historicism and differently designed roof shapes. The three-story tower at the island entrance is surrounded by a viewing platform on the second floor. The arch was concreted in 1916 with the help of French and Russian prisoners of war . Then the wrought iron railing and eight arched light carriers were installed. The bridge's walkway is attached to the high arched lower arch with slender concrete pillars on both sides. The bridge was handed over to the population on July 1, 1916. Due to the clearance height of 9 meters, even large steamships could pass the island without having to turn down the chimney.

The structure survived the Second World War unscathed. The bridge house on the island served as a youth club during the GDR era . The island was now called the Island of Youth and became a popular place for young couples. Over the years, however, more and more damage occurred, which made extensive restoration necessary in the 1970s. Due to the granted exemption, there was a prohibition sign on the bridge for a long time: "The accumulation on the bridge is prohibited by the police due to the overloading". In 1976 calculations showed a danger to the population, which was confirmed in June 1977 by measurements on the bridge. The renovation included in particular the removal of corroded components and a new coating of all reinforced concrete elements and was successfully completed in 1978. At the same time, the pavement, the lighting system as well as the drainage and the railing were renewed.

Until the beginning of this millennium, the bridge and the island were the destination of many visitors, because the Treptow Fireworks in Flames had been taking place in their vicinity since the 19th century and the Treptow Harbor Festival since 1989 . Due to the poor quality of the events, both festivals have not taken place since 2013. Other events such as a solstice festival or occasional live concerts are still offered to guests.

From 1992 to 1994 the Senate Administration had the abbey bridge completely renovated. Since 2005 there has been a new attraction on the Abbey Bridge: the blue ceramic hearts.

Bridge of hearts

Ascent to the bridge of hearts

On June 11, 2005, the Abbey Bridge became a bridge of hearts as part of the Treptower Festival . On blue, heart-shaped tiles , the organizers stamped the names of people who have made a special contribution to the well-being of children and young people. The selection of the awardees was based on their commitment to the organization of national and international cultural events and is the result of a public vote by children's groups. The hearts were handed over to the people or institutions in a small celebration by the children's action figure Theo Inkblot and then let into the ramp of the bridge. This campaign was so popular that in June 2006, at the suggestion of the Treptow-Köpenick district office, a non-profit association, Blue Stone Hearts, Child Friendliness. V. (Bridge of Hearts e.V.) was founded. The statutes primarily name the implementation of camps, workshops, events with educational and informational character in the sense of the European and international idea for children as the aim of the association. With this campaign, which was very well known around the world, Berlin joined the Blue Hearts movement for child-friendliness founded in the state of Saxony-Anhalt in 2000 . It has become a particularly child-friendly city that builds bridges between children, generations and nations. The family minister Ursula von der Leyen was the patron of the Blue Heart Campaign (as of 2013).

In 2015, children and artists from different countries took the tenth anniversary of the Bridge of Hearts as an opportunity to design 25 original parts (retaining wall elements) of the Berlin Wall with future themes.
