Manfred Wilhelm Padberg (born October 10, 1941 in Bottrop ; † May 12, 2014 ) was a German mathematician who dealt with linear and combinatorial optimization .

Life

Padberg grew up in Zagreb and Westphalia ( Vlotho , Dülmen , Olsberg , Brilon , Beckum ). From 1961 he studied mathematics at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , where he graduated in 1967. 1967/68 he was a research assistant at the University of Mannheim . From September 1968 he studied at Carnegie-Mellon University , where he made a master's degree and his doctorate (1971) in business administration ("Industrial Administration"). He then worked at the Berlin Science Center from 1971 to 1974. From 1974 he was Associate Professor and from 1978 Professor of Operations Research at New York University . He has been Research Professor there since 1988 and Professor emeritus from 2002. Among other things, he was visiting scholar and visiting professor at the University of Bonn , at the IBM Research Center in Yorktown Heights, the State University of New York at Stony Brook , in Cologne , Pisa , Rome , Augsburg , Münster, Grenoble , Carnegie-Mellon University, École polytechnique in Paris, the INRIA (Institut national de recherche en informatique et automatique) in Rocqencourt, "European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management" (EIASM) in Brussels , the " Center for Operations Research and Econometrics " (CORE) in Louvain-la- Neuve , the "Istituto di Analisi dei Sistemi ed Informatica" (IASI) in Rome.

He is known for his work on linear and combinatorial optimization (both theoretical and algorithmic), including branch-and-cut approaches to the traveling salesman problem . He also worked on backpack problems , packing problems. Most recently he lived in Paris and Marseille.
