Island of youth

The Insel der Jugend , abbey island until 1949 , is an island in the Berlin Spree in the Treptow-Köpenick district and belongs to the Alt-Treptow district . It is located between Treptower Park and the Plänterwald forest across from the Stralau peninsula .

History up to 1945 (trade and gastronomy)

In 1860, the acquired Rixdorfer citizens Emil Heinicke previously abandoned island, the pipe-island , from the city. On old maps it is called the Treppbruch or Treptower Bruch . At that time it was nothing more than a small elevation overgrown with reeds . With the help of street garbage and earth, an area of around 1.8 hectares was gradually created. Heinicke died on a trip with a sailing boat on the Müggelsee . His son-in-law took over the island and started raising rabbits . But he was also unsuccessful, so that the island changed hands several times in the following years. Among them was the restaurateur des Zenner , who had a retaining wall built around the island as a bulwark .

The island was included in the Berlin trade exhibition in Treptower Park in 1896 and appears on maps from this time as Neu-Spreeland . It was later called the Abbey Island , named after the restaurant that was built there in 1896 for the industrial exhibition in the style of a Scottish monastery ruin ( abbey ) and burned down in 1914. At that time the island could be reached by ferry. In 1904 there were first plans to open up the island with the help of a bridge. However, this generated considerable resistance from the Treptower restaurateurs, who feared competition. But the residents of Stralau also resisted building a bridge, because from their point of view the island belonged to Stralau. Income from the trade tax of a catering establishment should therefore be paid to them. The dispute between Treptow and Stralau was finally decided by Neukölln , who acquired the island in 1913 for half a million marks (adjusted for inflation in today's currency: around 2,714,000 euros). Now nothing stood in the way of building the first composite steel bridge in Germany, the Abbey Bridge . With the incorporation of Treptow and Neukölln into Greater Berlin , created in 1920 , the competition between the previously independent municipalities ended.

In 1949 the island was officially named the Island of Youth .
