The Treptowers are a building complex with a striking high-rise building in the district of Alt-Treptow from Berlin . The buildings completed in 1998 are located directly on the Spree . The name Treptowers is a haplology from Treptow and the English word for tower: tower .

History and architecture

The Treptowers complex consists of a total of four buildings and is the result of a competition held in 1993 that was won by the architect Gerhard Spangenberg . In the further course of the construction, a project-related community was formed with the Schweger and Partner offices and Reichel + Stauth from Braunschweig, which carried out the detailed planning and construction.

The building part of the actual tower, which is 125 meters high, is visible from afar, stands directly on the Spree and near the Elsenbrücke . It is the tallest office building in Berlin and represents a clear city mark in the Spree area , which as an urban dominant feature in the Spreetal can be seen from afar when looking towards the center and thus marks the end of the dense inner city development. For example, it can also be seen from the observation tower on the Löwendorfer Mountain near Trebbin , which is almost 40 kilometers away .

Architecturally , it is a point high-rise building on a square floor plan with a light steel-glass facade . In the lower third, the edges are clad with natural stones, which create a reference to the height of the old buildings.

Uses

Treptowers with adjoining old building complex

The 500 million euro complex integrates the buildings of the former Elektro-Apparate-Werke , which had been built by AEG from 1926 . After the Second World War and the expropriation, the factory became the VEB Elektro-Apparate-Werke Berlin-Treptow , a state-owned company in the GDR. Production continued in the listed buildings until 1995.

Roland Ernst Städtebau GmbH acted as the project developer and owner of the new office building . After completion, Allianz SE took over the building as the company's Berlin branch. Allianz sold the complex in 2011, but signed a lease with the buyer. The property was resold in 2013 and the lease for Allianz was fixed for 2019. The Berliner Zeitung called a sales price of around 70 million euros. As the new Berlin branch, Allianz has a new building, for which the foundation stone was laid on September 22, 2016 , in Adlershof on the edge of WISTA . It should be ready for occupancy in spring 2019.

In the Treptowers there is a permanent exhibition with over 500 works of art by contemporary artists. In addition, the Federal Criminal Police Office has a branch within the building.

Since 2017 there has been a transmission system for VHF broadcasting on the roof of the building, which is used for temporary event broadcasting on the frequency 106.4 MHz.

The alliance neon sign on the roof is visible from afar in all directions. When it was first moved in, the illuminated letters were around 15 meters high, but had to be reduced to eight meters, especially for air traffic, due to excessive light emission. At night the skyscraper becomes a striking eye-catcher in the Berlin skyline thanks to its lighting .

In front of the building stands the 30-meter-high sculpture Molecule Man by Jonathan Borofsky , whose three figures symbolize the meeting of the three districts of Treptow , Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain here.
