The Gustav-Heinemann-Brücke is a pedestrian bridge over the Spree in Berlin 's Mitte district of the district of the same name . It was created in connection with the commissioning of the main train station and connects the northern Spree promenade of Rahel-Hirsch-Straße with the southern Ludwig-Erhard-Ufer .

Location and origin

Ludwig-Erhard-Ufer as seen from the bridge

In terms of urban planning, the bridge creates access to Washingtonplatz from the Spreebogenpark and, with its exact north-south orientation, connects the parliament and government district to the traffic junction of the main train station. The Tiergarten tunnel with federal highway 96 runs under the pedestrian walkway and under the Spree .

The office of the Swiss architect Max Dudler designed the modern pedestrian bridge, the engineering office Grassl carried out the structural planning. The footbridge consists of prestressed steel girders (" Vierendeel girders "), is five meters wide and 88 meters long and is supported on two concrete pillars on the banks. Riveted wooden planks form the bridge decking, the railing consists of metal struts in concrete fields. 220 tons of wood and steel were used in the construction of the bridge  . The building was named in honor of the former Federal President Gustav Heinemann . The bridge was built in a short construction period and was opened on June 30, 2005 by the Senator for Urban Development Ingeborg Junge-Reyer in the presence of Christina Rau , wife of the former Federal President Johannes Rau and granddaughter of the namesake.
