Blue liquor is a NaOH solution with an indicator , usually litmus or bromothymol blue .

use

Blue lye was used to determine acidity in wines . So-called acidometer sets were available especially for this purpose, which consisted of a measuring cylinder and blue lye . With the indicator added to the sodium hydroxide solution, the acidity of a wine could be read from the color of the titration solution ; in the case of bromothymol blue, the neutral solution is green, while in the acidic area the color first changes to yellow and then to red. In the case of very dark red wines , however, the color change is sometimes difficult to observe.
