Foundation for Research & Technology - Hellas
The Foundation for Research & Technology - Hellas (FORTH) ( Greek Ίδρυμα Τεχνολογίας και Έρευνας - ΙΤΕ ( n. Sg. )) Is a research center in Greece , which reports to the Greek Ministry of Development and is controlled by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology. It consists of seven research institutes located in different Greek cities: Heraklion , Rethymno , Patras and Ioannina . The headquarters and the central administration are located in Heraklion on Crete .
It was founded in 1983 as the second research institution after the National Hellenic Research Foundation , today FORTH is internationally known and is one of the largest research organizations in Greece. The focus of FORTH in research and technology is in areas of scientific, social and economic interest, such as: computer science , molecular biology , laser , telecommunications , microelectronics , robotics , biotechnology , materials research , medical technology , Applied and Computational Mathematics , Biomedical , Mediterranean Studies, and historical studies . FORTH continues to operate Crete University Press (CUP), an independent science publisher.

- Institute of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (Heraklion) - IMBB
From 1987 to 2000, in part Thessaloniki -based Chemical Process Engineering Research Institute also be FORTH. In 2000, the CPERI was split off from FORTH and became the origin of a new research center, the National Center for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH).
