RT-70 is the name of three radio telescopes in countries that were once part of the USSR . All three have a reflector diameter of 70 m and work in the frequency range 5–300 GHz, 0.1 to 6 cm wavelength. The three telescopes are:

  • The Yevpatoria RT-70 radio telescope at the Center for Deep Space Communications , Yevpatoria , Crimea , 45 ° 11 '  N , 33 ° 11'  O . The observatory was built from 1973 to 1978 and opened in 1980. The observatory passed into Ukrainian supervision and took over paid tasks for international organizations, which meant that it was financed and continued to operate even after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
  • The Galjonki RT-70 radio telescope at the East Center for Deep Space Communications , Galjonki , near Ussurisk ( Russia ), 44 ° 1 '  N , 131 ° 45'  O . Commissioned in 1984. It stood idle for about ten years after the collapse of the Soviet Union and was thoroughly renovated and technically upgraded in 2005.

The telescopes in Evpatoria and Galenki were used for communication with Soviet space probes . The telescope in Yevpatoria was also used as a radar telescope for observing space debris and asteroids and for sending messages to extraterrestrial civilizations. Since the two radio telescopes are far apart, they could also be used as interferometers. In the absence of Russian missions in deep space since 2015, there are hardly any official tasks for the two radio telescopes in the field of space travel.

  • The Suffa RT-70 radio telescope had its foundation stone laying in 1981, but fell victim to the political upheavals and was never completed. With the end of the Soviet Union in 1991, ownership and responsibility passed to the state of Uzbekistan and the national observatory of Uzbekistan. In the absence of funding, the project was frozen. In 1995 there was an agreement on the joint further development of the project by Russia and Uzbekistan, but the planned funding did not materialize. From 2005 to 2007 construction was continued, but all work has been effectively suspended since 2007. The planned Suffa radio observatory is therefore a building ruin on the Suffa Plateau, Jizzax Province ( Uzbekistan ). 39 ° 37 '  N , 68 ° 27'  E
