The University of Cyprus ( Greek : Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου , Turkish : Kıbrıs Üniversitesi , English : University of Cyprus (UCY) ) is a university in Nicosia and the most important university in the Republic of Cyprus . It was founded in 1989. The first president was Nelly Tsouyopoulos . The British Byzantinist Robert Browning was one of the international advisors on establishing the university . Christopher Pissarides , who later won the Nobel Prize for Economics , received an honorary doctorate from the university in 2009.
Around 3500 students are taught in Greek and Turkish at six faculties at the university. The faculties are:
