Herb Hall

Herbert "Herb" Hall (born March 28, 1907 in Reserve (Louisiana) , † March 5, 1996 in San Antonio , Texas ) was an American jazz clarinetist and alto saxophonist.

He is the brother of jazz clarinetist Edmond Hall and son of clarinetist Edward Hall. Herb Hall first played guitar and banjo (in the Niles Jazz Band 1923–1925) before taking up the clarinet. In 1926 he went to Baton Rouge , where he played with Kid Augustine Victor, and played from 1927 in New Orleans in Sidney Desvigne's band . 1929-1945 he was in the territory band of Don Albert in San Antonio in Texas. He then lived in Philadelphia , where he played with Herman Autrey and a few years later in New York City . He played with Doc Cheatham in 1955 and toured Europe and North Africa with Sammy Price in 1955/56 and played with Eddie Condon from 1957 . In the 1960s he played alongside Condon with Wild Bill Davison (1968/69 tour with his Jazz Giants ) and in the 1970s with Bob Greene (in his Jelly Roll Morton Show), Don Ewell and Red Balaban .

He also recorded under his own name with a quartet with Arvell Shaw , Buzzy Drootin , Claude Hopkins (Old Tyme Modern, Sackville Records 1969), in an album with Storyville in 1970 and with Louis Cottrell junior with GHB in 1980.
