Herman Autrey

Herman Autrey (born December 4, 1904 in Evergreen , Alabama , † June 14, 1980 in New York City ) was an American swing jazz trumpeter .

Autrey began his career on the alto saxophone in his father's band, later switching to the trumpet. In 1923 he moved to Pittsburgh , where he played with local bands, and then toured the southern states; in Florida he worked with his own band. He settled - after stops in Boston, Washington DC and Philadelphia - in New York City and played with Charlie Johnson (1933-34) in Small's Paradise , then with Fletcher Henderson (1935) and Claude Hopkins (1938/9) and was with interruptions until 1941 member of the band Fats Waller & his Rhythm , heard on recordings such as Let's Pretend There's a Moon (1934) or Don't You Know or Don't You Care (1935). He joined Stuff Smith in 1942 , had a band on the West Coast, and worked for Benny Waters until 1944 . He then went into business for himself and played with his own bands in Brooklyn , but also in Canada . He also recorded with Buster Bailey in 1958 . In 1960 he had his own quartet and in 1961 his own trio. He played in the 1960 and in the Dixieland band Saints and Sinners by Vic Dickenson and Red Richards . In 1968 he made a guest appearance at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival . In the 1970s he was still performing in Jimmy Ryan’s New York club .
