geography

Steinitz is located between Friedersdorf and Weißig. In the west is an opencast mine with the place Caminau. The place is surrounded by several large forests. The Driewitz-Milkeler Heiden begins east of Steinitz , with around 20 square kilometers one of the largest unpopulated forest areas in Lusatia. The Eichberg is not far from the village.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1306 as Steinicz. However, the place is probably much older, which is suspected by excavation finds near Lohsa. A manor is documented for 1563. Around 1900 Steinitz was still a street village with a block and strip corridor similar to that of a win with manor blocks .

A battle with Napoleon's troops took place on the Eichberg in 1813 , a memorial still commemorates it today.

After the Congress of Vienna , the borders of Europe were redrawn, so the Saxon Steinitz was now in Prussia. The Protestant parish of Königswartha was abroad. After the Second World War, a large number of Germans poured into the Sorbian region from the former eastern territories. As a result, more and more German was spoken over the years and the Sorbian language was displaced. In the 1930s and 1940s, the place changed its affiliation several times. Since January 1st, 1994 the place belongs to the municipality Lohsa.

Steinitz manor

In 1410 the Steinitz estate was owned by the von Schreibersdorff family, who, with a brief interruption in the middle of the 15th century, owned it until the middle of the 17th century. Before 1672, Hans von Dallwitz acquired Gut Steinitz, which was mentioned in a document in 1563 as a manor and sold it in 1693 to the Lord von Schönburg. It remained in family ownership until it was acquired by Mr. von Schkopp in 1803. After only three years of ownership, the manor was sold again and changed hands frequently in the following years. In 1921 the Prince of Schönburg-Waldenburg acquired the manor. Dr. Adolf Oeren was the last owner since 1933 and was expropriated in 1945. Just two years later, Steinitz Castle was demolished. A ruinous farm building is still preserved.

Place name

Documented forms of the place name are Steinicz (1306), Steynicz (1410), Steynicz (1469) and finally Steinitz (1622). The written tradition of the Sorbian place name begins even later than with the German place name.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 281 in the 1880s, including 278 Sorbs (99%) and only three Germans. In 1956 Ernst Tschernik counted a Sorbian-speaking share of 53.2% of the population in the Steinitz community. Since then, the use of Sorbian has continued to decline in the village.

economy

There are numerous ponds nearby that are used for fish farming . Furthermore, there is a lot of forest that is used for forestry. The forestry continues to play still a big role, but it employs, as the resulting tourism, only a few people. Agriculture also plays an important role.

There are also small businesses in the village, e.g. B. a fruit cider, a pension, a carpentry and a restaurant.
