Mortka (officially the Ostfeld mine from 1937 to 1947 ), Upper Sorbian , is a village in the north of the Saxon district of Bautzen . It is part of the municipality of Lohsa and is part of the official Sorbian settlement area in Upper Lusatia .
geography
Mortka is located between Lohsa and Groß Särchen on the county road K2919. It is 5 km to Lohsa. Around the place there are many smaller and larger ponds that are used for fishing . In the west there is an extensive forest area with predominantly fir and pine trees .
history
One building from 1825 has been preserved, the rest of the buildings are more recent. The first documentary mention took place in 1359, but excavation finds from the neighboring village of Lohsa suggest that the place is much older. The place changed its name several times, the manor is documented for 1777. The place has belonged to the Lohsa parish since the 16th century. The Saxon Mortka came to Prussia through the Congress of Vienna. The state border ran not far from the town, which divided the historically grown settlement area. Even after the dissolution of the state of Prussia, the numerous state, district and district boundaries were based on the agreed course. The place was incorporated into the municipality of Litschen on January 1, 1974. He has been part of Lohsa since January 1st, 1994.
Place name
The following place names have been handed down over the centuries: Mortkaw (1359), Mortekaw (1400), Mortkow (1410), Mortkau (1546), Mortka (1548) and Mortka from 1791. In 1936 the place name was changed from ideological by the National Socialists Changed grounds in Ostfeld mine. Since 1947 the place has been called Mortka again.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 166, without exception, Sorbian-speaking inhabitants in the 1880s. In 1956 Ernst Tschernik counted a Sorbian-speaking share of only 51.2% of the population in the Mortka community. Since then, the use of Sorbian has continued to decline in the village.
economy
The place benefits from the nearby Knappenrode reservoir , which is an important economic factor. There is also assisted living and a few small businesses, such as a taxi company, a dentist, a roofer, a PC service, a guest house and a restaurant.
