The relics of a prehistoric elephant refer to the archaeological site of the remains of at least two prehistoric elephants in the Zoo Park in the Namibian capital Windhoek .
In 1962, these remains were found during construction work in the Zoo Park in Windhoek-Central . These are - based on paleontological studies - at least 5000 years old tusks , teeth, jaws and other bones. In addition, some tools were discovered that were probably used to kill and slaughter the elephants.
The area was initially secured by a fence before the finds were brought to the Namibian National Museum . Since 1990 there has been a small elephant memorial by the Namibian sculpture artist Dörte Berner at the former site .
The site and the finds have been registered as a National Monument of Namibia since August 15, 1963 .
