The Namibian National Museum ( English National Museum of Namibia ) is a museum in Namibia . It is a state-sponsored cultural and research institution with both state and private research contracts. The National Museum of Namibia is headquartered on Robert Mugabe Avenue in the Central district of Windhoek , in the former building of the Imperial Realschule , opposite the Alte Feste.
It goes back to the "Landesmuseum" founded by the German colonial administration in 1907; it was renamed "Staatsmuseum" in 1957 and was given its current name in 1994.
It is housed in two locations:
- " Alte-Feste -Museum" with the historical and national history exhibition - since the end of 2014 without exhibits
- " Owela Museum" with the natural science and zoological exhibition
The nearby Independence Memorial Museum is a national museum, but is not called the National Museum .

With 1.5 million zoological specimens and 4120 works of art, the Owela Museum maintains the most extensive collections and research departments on the geological and zoological wealth of the country; including among others:
- Arachnology and myriapodology ,
- Entomology ,
- Herpetology ,
- Ichthyology ,
- Mammalogy and
- Ornithology ; as well as social science departments such as:
- Archeology ,
- Anthropology and
- Modern history .
