The Alte Feste is a fortress located in the center of the Namibian capital Windhoek . The architects were the master mason Gustav Tünschel and, from 1901, Gottlieb Redecker .
The Alte Feste houses part of the National Museum of Namibia , including the equestrian monument in the courtyard .
history
It was built by the German Schutztruppe under Captain Curt von François to secure peace between the warring Nama and Herero . Its construction began on October 18, 1890 and is seen as the laying of the foundation stone of today's city, when a large number of personnel billeted around the fortress when the fortress was built. Guns from the time they were built still stand on the towers and walls.
Younger story
The Alte Feste was closed on July 1, 2014 (only the inner courtyard is still accessible; as of January 2019), as it is to be renovated by the responsible ministry for 50 million Namibia dollars . The renovation has not yet started as of January 2019.
The equestrian monument , inaugurated in front of the main entrance on November 14, 2010, was dismantled on December 25, 2013 and moved inside the Alte Feste.
