Prince Masahito of Hitachi ( Japanese 常 陸 宮 正 仁 親王 , Hitachi-no-miya Masahito-shinnō ; born November 28, 1935 in Tokyo ) is a member of the Japanese imperial family and the younger brother of the former emperor Akihito as well as the uncle of the incumbent Tenno, Naruhito . He is the older brother of Takako Shimazu . Prince Hitachi is the second son and sixth child of Emperor Shōwa and Empress Kōjun . After Naruhito took office on May 1, 2019, he is third in line to the throne. Prince Hitachi is married to Princess Hanako of Hitachi and is known for his charity and interest in cancer research .

Prince Hitachi was born in the Tokyo Imperial Palace . His original title was Prince Yoshi ( 義 宮 正 仁 , Yoshi-no-miya Masahito ).

He attended elementary school and high school in Gakushūin University . In the late war years he was evacuated to Nikko with his brother, the then Crown Prince, in 1944 to be safe from the American bombing of Tokyo. After the war from 1947 to 1950, he, his brother, and his sisters Princesses Kazuko, Atsuko and Takako received private English lessons from the American Elizabeth Gray Vining.

Prince Yoshi studied chemistry at Gakushuin University and successfully graduated in 1958. He continued his studies in the science faculty of the University of Tokyo . In 1969 he became a research assistant at the Japan Cancer Research Foundation.

On September 30, 1964, he married Tsugaru Hanako, the fourth daughter of the late Count Tsugaru Yoshitaka. Tsugaru Yoshitaka was a count from the nobility ( kazoku ) formally abolished in 1947 and a descendant of the daimyo family who resided at Hirosaki Castle in Aomori Prefecture . One day after the wedding, Emperor Shōwa gave his second son the title Hitachi-no-miya ( 常 陸 宮 ). Before that, the prince received permission from the imperial court to found a branch of the imperial family. At the wedding, his wife became Princess Hitachi. Prince and Princess Hitachi have no children.

The prince and princess are presidents of various organizations that deal with international exchange, as well as honorary chairmen of organizations that deal with the severely disabled, protect nature and the like.
