The Zoo Park is a public park at the Independence Avenue in the Namibian capital Windhoek . It is located in Windhoek-Central .

The park has the function of a city park and is the only larger park in the city center besides the parliament garden of the Ink Palace . In addition to the colonial- era zoo café , a children's playground and a small open-air stage are located here .

history

The zoo park is of prehistoric interest. In 1961, the remains of an elephant were found here , estimated to be at least 5000 years old. A memorial has been in the park to commemorate this since 1990.

At the time of the German Schutztruppe around 1897, the area was known for the Schutztruppen war memorial . It was erected in memory of the fallen German soldiers during the Nama uprising . The area around the monument has become a popular recreational destination. In 1911, the area was handed over to the city of Windhoek for administration, before the first proposals to build a zoo arose in 1916 . At the same time, the Cafe Zoo was built. The zoo was developed between 1922 and 1929.

In 1956, large parts of the Zoo Park should fall victim to the expansion of the major roads. The population was decidedly against this step. In the end, the park was simply redesigned. The zoo was closed between 1958 and 1963. In 1963 the renovation work was completed and the new park was opened to the Windhoek population under the name of Dr. Verwoed Park featured. In 1989 the park got its historical name again as Zoo Park. A proposal to rename it " Marcus Garvey Park" was rejected in 2006.
