The Knappensee ( Upper Sorbian Hórnikečanski JĘZOR ), including memory Knappenrode called, is an opencast mine southeast of Hoyerswerda in Saxony . It is named after the northern town of Knappenrode and is largely located in the municipality of Lohsa . The lake was created from 1951 to 1953 by flooding the open- cast lignite mine at Werminghoff .

Emergence

The project was the first recreational area in the post-mining landscape of the Lusatian lignite district . Otto Rindt played a key role in planning the recultivation of the lake. Even before 1945, the remaining open pit was filled with water due to a flood from the black water and formed as a lake. It had very good ecological and landscape planning prerequisites for the intended recreational use: a flat sandy beach over 4 kilometers in length, as opposed to high banks elsewhere and pine and poplar stands from reforestation in the 1920s. In contrast to many other opencast mining holes, the water quality was so good that fish populations and water birds could develop. The current uses are: flood protection , low water elevation , recreational recreation, nature conservation and inland fishing.

The dammed waters are the Hoyerswerdaer Schwarzwasser and the Koblenzer Graben . The storage facility does not have a real barrier structure, only a flood protection dam made of sand. Only the 600 meter long “Maukendorfer Absperrdamm” in the northwest is recognizable as a dam . 1.41 million m³ are kept as a flood protection area during normal operation ; the water level is then 125.50 meters above sea level and allows a maximum water depth of 12 meters.

The lake is a popular sports water. There are several sailing clubs, a canoeing club and a sea sports club on the shore. The approximately 8-kilometer circular route around the water is used by many runners as a training route. In addition, the Knappensee has several tent sites and options for long-term camping. It is a popular local recreation area for the city of Hoyerswerda. The gray heron lies east-northeast of the Knappensee . Both belong to the Lusatian Lakeland .

The lake has been closed since March 2014 in order to carry out the long-term bank consolidation work. The work should continue until 2022 Template: future / in 2 years. According to the original plan, the renovation work should be completed in 2017.
