The Gray Heron Lake , in Upper Sorbian Čaplacy jězor , is part of the Lusatian Lake District and is located on its Saxon side in the Bautzen district southeast of the city of Hoyerswerda and between the two larger lakes Knappensee and Silbersee .

The area of ​​the lake is 138 hectares. It was built on the site of the former Werminghoff I opencast mine, and its flooding was completed in 2005. The lake is located in the immediate vicinity of the former Knappenrode briquette factory, today's Knappenrode energy factory: Lusatian mining museum . The body of water owes its name to the largest colony of gray herons in Germany, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the museum area - on the lake.
