The store was built from 1967 to 1972 by the flooding of the former mines of Werminghoffer lignite mining II (Werminghoff II) , which was in operation from 1933 to 1960. The former opencast mining holes were connected by a canal:

  • The Mortkaer Restloch, so-called Mortka Lake ( Upper Sorbian Mortkowski jězor ), which is used exclusively for fish rearing.
  • The Friedersdorfer Restloch, so-called Silbersee ( Upper Sorbian Slěborny jězor ), which was previously used for service water supply, flood protection, low water elevation, as a bathing water for recreation and fishing.

In March 2011, bank consolidation work began on the Silbersee and should be completed by 2020. The lake was closed for the duration of the work. The lake is located in the catchment area of the Spree / Kleine Spree .

At the beginning of August 2018 there was massive fish death in Europe due to the drought and heat .
