The Loben is a moorland near the southern Brandenburg municipality of Hohenleipisch in the Elbe-Elster district . The area is located in the former Liebenwerdaer Heide about sixty kilometers north of the Saxon state capital Dresden in the Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft nature park .

It is one of the last large, largely intact moors in southern Brandenburg. About 670 hectares of the praise are under conservation. An extension to 1,700 hectares of protected area is planned.

Protection purpose of the nature reserve

"The protection purpose consists in the preservation and development of the vegetation units in the mosaic of pine forests, spruce-pine forests, swamp forests, mixed deciduous forests, dwarf shrub-rich wet heaths, wet heaths rich in dwarf shrubs, peat-bog societies, and peat-bog communities, which are characteristic of the forests and heaths of the old Pleistocene lowlands."

history

Sundew
Smooth snake

The landscape of the flat moor was created here during the last Ice Age around 12,000 years ago, when the meltwater that ran off formed lakes in this area that eventually silted up. The construction of the Elsterwerda-Gohraer raft ditch from 1740 to 1744 by Johann Müller, who served the wood supply in the Dresden and Meißen area , accelerated the silting up in Loben, as a result of which the Döllinger See , located south of Döllingen for fishing, dried up.

Around 1765, the praising was also referred to as Lohmlachen and Morast. Its name probably comes from the Slavic word lom , meaning forest break.

The peat, which has been mined in this area for several centuries, has been used in the medical facilities of Bad Liebenwerda , for example in the local rheumatism clinic, since 1904. Initially it was still transported by horse-drawn carts.

In addition, spa businesses in Bad Gottleuba , Bad Schmiedeberg and Bad Düben were supplied with bath peat from here .

In 1981 the area of praise was placed under nature protection and on June 8, 2010 a 5.60 m high viewing platform was opened, from which one can see large parts of the nature reserve.

On May 29, 2020, a major fire broke out in the bog area , which quickly spread to around 30 hectares and increased to 100 hectares the following day. Since large parts of the area are neither accessible for heavy fire-fighting equipment nor for firefighters on foot, extinguishing the moor fire turned out to be very difficult, according to the responsible operations control center . The fire brigade, which is on site with around 170 emergency services, predicted an operation over several weeks, also because the peaty soil encourages the fire to spread rapidly underground.

flora

In the bog-based plants include Lycopodium clavatum , fern Einblütiges, moneses , adder's tongue and bell heather . The common cranberry , the gentian , the sundew and the swamp porst also occur here . There are autochthonous occurrences of the common spruce accompanied by the long-leaved star chickweed .

Other typical vegetation units in the area are pine-spruce forest and birch-pedunculate oak forest.

fauna

The praise is the habitat for the tree frog , adder and smooth snake . It is of great importance as a breeding, sleeping and gathering place for the crane .

Other breeding bird species worth mentioning in the area are the sparrowhawk , tree falcon , red kite , black kite , water rail , woodcock , common snipe , goat milker , ortolan and the rough owl . Furthermore, here are deer , otters , weasels and pine marten ago.
