The Buchwäldchen-Muckwar pond landscape nature reserve is a 95.34  hectare nature reserve in Luckaitztal , a municipality in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district in Brandenburg . It is part of the Niederlausitzer Landücken nature park .

Location and history

The area is located in the northeastern part of the district . Most of the nature reserve is located in the Muckwar district , a smaller area in the northeast in the Buchwäldchen district , both of which are named after them. To the west, the Lübbenau – Kamenz railway with the Luckaitztal stop runs past the area in a north-south direction. The desolate village of Berlinchen was located within the nature reserve .

In the area there are a total of nine fish ponds of various sizes that were created centuries ago by the Cistercians for fish farming. The largest pond, the Great Paul , already appeared in the directory of natural monuments of the province of Brandenburg from 1933 as a natural monument particularly worthy of protection. Due to the lignite mining and the associated lowering of the groundwater, it fell dry between 1987 and 1993 and had to be artificially irrigated at times. To the north is the Kleine Paul , to the west is the borscht pond . The three ponds are supplemented by six more ponds. This is the north of the Big Brewer Pond , south of that of Small Brewers pond south of thereof Ms. Pond to the west, the center of Mr Pond , in the northern binds calibration passes and the Krummetteich the east. They are connected by ditches and drain into the Vetschauer Mühlenfließ .

The area was placed under protection in 1997 and in 2004 38 hectares of which were transferred to the Brandenburg Nature Conservation Fund.

Flora and fauna

Great Paul

In addition to the nine fish ponds, the area is dominated by extensive forest and forest areas. Below the Großer Paul there is an alder forest , supplemented by pedunculate oaks - hornbeam forests and alluvial forests . A large part is forested with pines ; some afforestations consist of non-indigenous plants such as the Douglas fir . In addition, marsh grass meadows alternate with moist tall herbaceous meadows and lowland hay meadows. The king fern , dragon arum and broad-leaved orchid have been identified in endangered plant species .

Red-bellied toads , the northern crested newt , otters and tree frogs have been observed in the water ; grass snakes on land . The area is also a habitat for the crane , the black stork and the sea eagle .

development

In recent years, the foundation has removed numerous pines and replaced them in favor of deciduous tree species that are suitable for the location. This should create a near-natural mixed forest in the medium term. Since the foundation assumes that natural vegetation is not to be expected in some areas, a pre-cultivation with sessile oak was carried out in 2009. Small bodies of water were created to improve the living conditions of the fire-bellied toad. In addition, the edge of the forest is to be developed in order to create a feeding, breeding and retreat area for animals and plants.
