The Große Paul is an artificially created pond in the district of Muckwar , a district of the municipality of Luckaitztal in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district in Brandenburg . It is part of the Niederlausitzer Landücken nature park .

location

The pond is located in the northeast of the municipality of Luckaitztal, west of Muckwar and south of the Buchwäldchen district . The Great Paul is the largest of the nine ponds in terms of area and is located in the south of the ensemble. To the north are the Little Paul and six other ponds; to the west is the borscht pond . There is a tributary over the Luckaitz from the southwest.

History and Development

The artificially created ponds were probably created in the 12th century by the Cistercians for fish farming and used by the farms in Buchwäldchen and Muckwar. Until the 19th century there was a settlement southeast of the Great Paul, Berlinchen , which was probably destroyed by fire. The Great Paul appeared as early as 1933 in the directory of natural monuments of the province of Brandenburg as a natural monument particularly worthy of protection. Due to the lignite mining , the groundwater level dropped so much at times that the Great Paul was dry between 1987 and 1993 and at times had to be artificially irrigated. In 1997 the area was placed under protection as the Buchwäldchen-Muckwar pond landscape and has been repopulated since then. In the 21st century the pond is operated by a pond farm in Fürstlich Drehna for carp breeding.

fauna and Flora

Red-bellied toads , the northern crested newt , otters and tree frogs have been observed in the water ; grass snakes on land . The area is also a habitat for the crane , the black stork and the sea eagle .

The king fern , dragon arum and broad-leaved orchid have been identified in endangered plant species . Particularly noteworthy are the riparian zones with an alder forest , which are supplemented by pedunculate oaks , hornbeam forests and alluvial forests .
