The Grünhaus post-mining nature reserve is located in the former Lauchhammer - Finsterwalde open-cast mining area in southern Brandenburg .

description

The nature reserve was created as a post-mining landscape . It covers around 1785 hectares in the Elbe-Elster and Oberspreewald-Lausitz districts ; 710 hectares of the nature reserve are designated as a total reserve. A small part of the area, approx. 24 ha, was placed under protection as NSG Grünhaus as early as 1939 .

Dump soils that are poor in nutrients and pollutants provide ideal habitats for a large number of endangered species in the newly emerging natural landscape for decades to come. In 2001, more than 1300 species were counted in one day. The area of this post-mining landscape has been left to natural succession since 2006.

The nature reserve overlaps in parts with the approx. 2000 hectare nature paradise Grünhaus , which is owned by the NABU Foundation for National Natural Heritage .
