The Alte Elster and Rieke nature reserve is located in the area of ​​the town of Herzberg (Elster) in the Elbe-Elster district in Brandenburg .

The area with the identification number 1340 was placed under nature protection by ordinance of March 26, 1981 and July 1, 2007 . The approximately 175.6 hectare nature reserve extends south of the core town of Herzberg (Elster) and northwest of Bahnsdorf , a district of the city of Uebigau-Wahrenbrück , to the west and east of the Schwarzen Elster . The state road L 67 runs to the west, the B 101 to the east and the L 673 to the south.
