Interpretation of the place name

The place takes its name from the Rothsteiner Felsen , which is located near the village and which appears there as the highest point of an underground volcanic mountain range with its reddish iron oxide colors .

Local history

The village was first mentioned in a document in 1309 and, after several changes of ownership, sold to the Liebenwerda office in 1587 . During the Thirty Years' War , like many other villages in the area, the village was completely devastated by looting. According to oral tradition, only one servant and one maid survived.

In 1835 the village had 28 houses with 137 inhabitants. There were 27 horses, 149 cattle, 355 sheep and 52 pigs.

In 1836 a school house was built in Rothstein and from 1870 onwards, simple, hand-operated shafts for lignite extraction gave the town a boost in development. In addition to mining and agriculture , the quarry on the rock, which was abandoned between the two world wars , developed as a further source of income .

In the first half of the twentieth century there were wheelwright , stove fitters , a blacksmith , a butcher , a carpenter and locksmith in the village . In 1991 the place was connected to the drinking water network, the sewage network was also completed.

Culture and sights

Open-air stage in front of the Rothsteiner Felsen

The annual highlight is the Rothsteiner Felsenfest , which has been celebrated every 2nd weekend in July since 1888. The good organization, the variety of the performances as well as the charming surroundings on the rock attract thousands of visitors from near and far to the rocks every year and made it one of the largest folk festivals in the area in the second half of the 20th century. In recent years the number of visitors has fallen sharply and the festival has lost its national significance.

Since 1997 the Indian and Western meeting has been taking place on the rocks in August, which is becoming more and more popular.

At the Rothstein cemetery there is a war memorial in the form of a stele in honor of the Rothstein residents who died in the two world wars.
