Head House Rothstein (2007)

The ladder house is located in the Rothstein district in the small town of Uebigau-Wahrenbrück in the Elbe-Elster district in southern Brandenburg . Here the building is integrated into a green area in the center of Rothstein.

Building description and history

The former communal head house of the place mentioned for the first time in 1309 was built in the second half of the 19th century . According to the historian and former district monument keeper Gerold Glatte (1934–2003) from Val Gardena , it belongs to one of three variants found in the area of the former province of Saxony . He described it as a “simple design of an independent building without gates.” Other designs were larger buildings with lockable gates and so-called ladder walls .

The overall construction has six strip foundations made of bricks , which are located 2.60 m apart and protrude about 0.80 m over the site. It has a total length of 13.25 m and a width of 1.43 m at the foundation. A wooden jamb construction with attached rafters rests on the foundations . The roof is covered with tiles. The house has a total height of 2.1 m. It was once mainly used to store community-owned ladders with extra length, tear hooks or for tools required for building purposes. In addition, it was common practice to keep long fire brigade ladders and other fire fighting equipment in such a way that it was accessible to the public in such ladder houses.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the building in Rothstein, which was relatively well preserved at that time, caught the attention of local conservationists. It was finally renovated in 1986 and placed under monument protection. Like the pigeon house in the not far away Dobra , which at that time also fell into the focus of monument protection, the ladder house in Rothstein next to the Rothsteiner Felsen presents itself as a sight and an interesting gem of the village.
