The Rothsteiner Felsen is a naturally formed rock in the state of Brandenburg . It is located south of Rothstein , a district of Uebigau-Wahrenbrück in the Brandenburg district of Elbe-Elster , about six kilometers northeast of the city of Bad Liebenwerda .

Emergence

The rock of the rock was formed about 560 million years ago in the Ediacarian on the sea floor. The rock is greywacke , a mixture of different types of rock fragments. Due to the proximity to hot springs at the time, the Grauwacke is intensely silicified and therefore very resistant. The rock survived the repeated ice advances during the Elster and Saale cold periods . After the Saale cold period, the rock probably only protruded slightly above its surroundings. The removal of loose ice-age sediments in the cold deserts of the Vistula Ice Age, which no longer reached the area, made the rock clearly emerge from its surroundings.

use

The Rothsteiner Felsen was used economically in the past, Rothsteiner gravel was used as a subsurface in the construction of many roads in the area, and the stones also formed the building material for buildings in Rothstein. This made the rock significantly smaller. In 1915, the remaining rock was placed under protection as an area natural monument .

Summer festivals took place on the rock as early as 1900. Since then, the Rothsteiner Felsenfest has been celebrated every year on the 2nd weekend in July at the foot of the rock , which is one of the largest folk festivals in the area.

The Rothsteiner Felsen is a well-known climbing rock.

More rocks in Brandenburg

In addition to the Rothsteiner Felsen there was also the Fischwasser cliff (Gem. Heideland ) about 15 km to the east . However, this was completely dismantled and is no longer preserved. There are solid rock in four other places in the state of Brandenburg (near Großkoschen , Großthiemig , Sperenberg and Rüdersdorf ). The rocks that exist there today were all created by the quarry.
