The Schradengemeinde Großthiemig is located about 15 kilometers southeast of Elsterwerda in the immediate vicinity of the Saxon state border.

The place was first mentioned as Thimmigk in 1389 .

Großthiemig belonged to the Liebenwerda district in the province of Brandenburg since 1816 and to the Bad Liebenwerda district in the GDR district of Cottbus from 1952 . The community has been in the Elbe-Elster district in Brandenburg since 1993

Personalities

  • Wilhelm Braune (1850–1926), Germanist, born in Großthiemig
  • August Förster (1880–1959), faith healer, lived in Großthiemig. Even today there are his so-called "August drops" in the Löwenapotheke Ortrand and in Hirschfeld. In many places the older people knew him as "Dafts August" (a parcel in Großthiemig is commonly known as "Dafts Birken").
