Woodstock is a documentary about the Woodstock Festival . Over 20 cameramen produced over 100 hours of color film material at the festival. A three-hour widescreen film was cut from this material . The split-screen technology is remarkable , with which up to three perspectives were sometimes mounted side by side. The festival itself was a financial disaster, but the box office made up a large part of the loss, bringing in around $ 5 million in just 18 weeks.

Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music

Jimi Hendrix's guitar that he used on his performance

In terms of content, the film is a mixture of performances by the musicians and a documentary with many interviews . For the 25th anniversary of the Oscar-winning work, a version of the film extended by around 40 minutes was released. Directed by Michael Wadleigh , the film describes one of the high points in the history of pop culture . The documentary shows, among other things, the scandalous interpretation of the US national anthem by Jimi Hendrix as well as numerous stars and bands such as Janis Joplin , Joe Cocker , Carlos Santana , Sly & the Family Stone , Ten Years After and The Who .

Reviews and awards

“The monumental event, like the film and the soundtrack, became a symbol of a self-confident counterculture, which by then had already passed its climax. As a musical and historical document, it is rousing and extremely informative, even if the miserable and superfluous German synchronization significantly affects the atmospheric density. "

"With the help of reports and interviews, the marginal phenomena of the mass event are glossed over and, together with the performances of famous pop bands, provide a document of the mentality of the generation under 30 that is well worth seeing."
