history

In 1234 Altenau was first mentioned as Althena and Alzona . The name is to be interpreted as al te na (all too close). The place was on an old Elbarm and was therefore threatened by flooding. A document according to which the place was mentioned as early as 1217 is now considered a forgery from a later time. In 1243 7 Hufen became the property of the monastery in Mühlberg through purchase. However, Altenau had to pay interest payments to the Nimbschen monastery in 1251 . In 1273 the Marienstern Monastery in Mühlberg acquired the village of Althena and the Grunehyde forest from Margrave Heinrich for 25 silver marks . After the abbey in Mühlberg was dissolved, Altenau became an official village. In 1550 11 possessed men and 22 hooves are mentioned. In the Thirty Years War (1637) the place was plundered by the Swedes, in 1650 there were only 4 desolate estates left. Population development: 1816 = 92, 1910 = 157

On April 1, 1974, the municipalities of Altenau and Fichtenberg were merged to form the new municipality of Fichtenberg-Altenau. On February 1, 1990, both communities became independent again. With the formation of the offices in Brandenburg after the fall of the Wall, Altenau came to the Office Mühlberg / Elbe on July 21, 1992 . On August 31, 2001 Altenau was incorporated into the city of Mühlberg / Elbe and the Mühlberg / Elbe office was dissolved.
