Kahla ( Sorbian Kałow ) is a district of the municipality of Plessa in the Elbe-Elster district in the state of Brandenburg and is located three kilometers east of the city of Elsterwerda on the right side of the Black Elster in the Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft nature park .

Until the district reform in Brandenburg in 1993, Kahla belonged to the Bad Liebenwerda district and currently has 302 residents. The place is on both sides of the federal highway B169.

history

Kahla was first mentioned in documents in 1406 with the name "Kauwel". The place name is derived from the profession of blacksmith ( Sorbian "kowal"). Like Kraupa , Krauschütz , Biehla , Kotschka , Plessa and Dreska, the place originally belonged to the Elsterwerda rulership . The originally Sorbian population of Kahla operated mainly arable and livestock farming. In 1762 the pastor Ertel, who worked in Elsterwerda from 1755 to 1763, wrote about the people in the area: As I have often found, local villagers all speak Wendish [Sorbian] . That is why he sometimes preached God's word to them in the Wendish language.

In 1835 Kahla had 29 houses, 185 inhabitants, 34 horses, 375 cattle, 176 sheep, 3 goats and 87 pigs. In 1852 a school house was built, which still exists today. In 1874 the Upper Lusatian Railway was built from Kohlfurt via Biehla to Falkenberg . During this time, a housing estate was built north of the railway line for the miners who worked in lignite mining.

Sorbian was spoken in the area of the former rule of Elsterwerda until the last decades of the 19th century, as recorded in 1885 by the Lower Sorbian linguist Mjertyn Moń (1848–1905). When he got off the train in Plessa and went on a hike to Kahla and Dreska , he often had the opportunity to use the Sorbian language .

On April 1, 1974, Kahla merged with the neighboring municipality of Döllingen to form the new municipality of Döllingen-Kahla. On February 1, 1990, the two places were separated again.

Kahla was incorporated into the community of Plessa on December 31, 2001. The storm depression Kyrill caused severe damage to the village in January 2007. Several barns fell victim to a tornado that hit the town . Almost every second house was affected, so that the district administrator of the Elbe-Elster district called for donations.

Culture and sights

One of the oldest investment ruins in Germany, the Berzit Tower in Kahla

Buildings

The landmark of Kahla is the 35 meter high Bertzit Tower , visible from afar in the Elstertal , an investment ruin for lignite refinement from 1920. The plan was to carbonize the lignite from the nearby Ada mine at low temperatures. It is a steel frame building. The stairs are closed due to structural defects and should therefore not be climbed. It is part of a planned factory, in which the Bertzit method should be used for coal drying.

The redesigned town center includes the village green with its late baroque church and the former school building.

Regular events

  • On the Day of German Unity , a torch and lantern parade has taken place in Kahla every year since 1995.

Nature reserves

The 21-hectare nature reserve Kleine Wiesen extends about one kilometer northwest of the village . Among other things, it includes a wet meadow complex with spring areas and orchid occurrences, which has become rare in this form .
