Life
Filip Rězak was born on April 22nd, 1859 as the son of a farmer in Auritz near Bautzen. He received extensive training in Prague. There Rězak attended the German grammar school on the Lesser Town of Prague from 1874 to 1880 , studied theology at the Wendish seminary from 1881 to 1884 and received his doctorate there in 1904. He had been a member of the Maćica Serbska since 1875 , belonged to the Sorbian student association Serbowka and translated the during his studies Roman Babička by the Czech writer Božena Němcová under the title Naša wowka in Upper Sorbian .
After completing his studies, Rězak was chaplain in Crostwitz from 1884 to 1889 , parish administrator in Spittel until 1894 , president of the Wendish seminary in 1894/1895 and court chaplain in Dresden from 1895 to 1921 . Dr. Filip Rězak was honorary chaplain in Bautzen, where he died of a stroke on September 17, 1921 - the day Christian Schreiber was ordained bishop . His grave is in the cemetery in the ruins of the St. Nicholas Church near the grave of Michał Hórnik .
His brother Jan Rězak (1863–1934) was a Sorbian teacher and editor; his sister Hana Rězakec (1872–1951) helped, among other things, with the creation of the dictionary.
Act
In addition to the aforementioned novel, Rězak mainly translated religious texts, for example the Old Testament from Hebrew . He also worked as an author and lexicographer and published his main work in 1920, the German-Wendish encyclopedic dictionary of the Upper Lusatian language . In this normative dictionary he replaced Germanisms in part with neologisms and Slavic loanwords .
As a stenographer , his adaptation of the Gabelsberger shorthand to Sorbian published in 1895 did not receive a great response, but he did pioneering work.
