history

Auritz - with the entrance from the direction of Rabitz

Like the entire city of Bautzen, Auritz lies in an ancient settlement area. Similar to Niederkaina (just not so important), there was a Neolithic and Bronze Age burial ground here . In addition, remains from the time of the Great Migration were found in the district. The old traffic route via Auritz is documented by a Roman coin found (from the time of Constantine the Great 323–337) and gold ducats from Ludwig the Bavarian (circa 1340).

The place was first mentioned at the beginning of the 15th century as Weritz or Awricz . Auritz was an independent municipality until 1950, then was incorporated into Jenkwitz and joined Bautzen in 1999.

On the southern corridor is the so-called "Russian column", a slender granite stele on which God is praised in German and Sorbian. The column was lost for decades until it was finally found, restored and put back in its original location in 2010.

After the fall of the Wall , a large number of single-family houses were built in the vicinity of the Auritzer Gutshof south of the actual town center. The district has therefore more than doubled its population since 1990.

population

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 77 inhabitants in the 1880s; 69 of them were Sorbs (90%) and 8 were Germans. The language change to German took place mainly in the first half of the 20th century. In 1956 , Ernst Tschernik had a Sorbian-speaking population of only 23.7% in the Jenkwitz community, to which Auritz now belonged.
