Location of the city center in Bautzen
|
The city center , Upper Sorbian , is a district of Bautzen , which consists of the historic old town and city center. It is the historical nucleus of the city and the center of urban trade and cultural life and has a population of over 5,000. Large parts are available as cultural monuments under preservation . The inner city includes both the historic old town within the inner city wall with multi-storey buildings predominantly from the 15th to 18th centuries, as well as the so-called city center between the inner and outer city walls.
The actual old town, i.e. the district within the inner city wall, covers an area of 19 hectares, which is divided into 326 plots. It is protected as a monument of urban design .
Population development
From around 1300 to the present day, the population of Bautzen's old town has hardly changed and has always been around 5000. During the GDR era, the population slowly but steadily declined and increasingly consisted of socially weaker population groups. After 1990 the population has grown continuously until today. The quality of living and leisure has increased steadily.
Population:
- 1996: 4837
- 2000: 5184
- 2006: 5159
- 2013: 5370
The demand for refurbished living space in the city center is high. In particular, the need for one and two-room apartments can no longer be met in certain rental areas. A further increase in population is, however, also limited by the density, degree of refurbishment, ownership structure and capacity of the urban area.
Denominations
In 2010, of 5,369 inhabitants, 1,137 were Protestant (21.2%), 548 were Catholic (10.2%) and 3,684 did not belong to any or any other religious community (68.6%).
