The western suburb , Upper Sorbian Zapadne předměsto ? / i , is a district of Bautzen with around 3,400 inhabitants and extends on the western bank of the Spree . The compactly built area west of the Friedensbrücke is often referred to as Bautzener Neustadt . The district also includes the old village of Seidau , on whose historical area the district is largely located, the Herrenteichsiedlung and extensive natural areas on the Humboldthain . In 1272, Bautzen received all of their goods in Ottelwitz from the Johann line of the margraves for use as pasture for the cattle of the citizens. The village of Ottelwitz is said to have been in the area of today's Herrenteichsiedlung. The pastures were used until 1847. From 1776 to 1910 these areas also served as parade ground. From the thirties to 1945 parts were also used as an airfield.

Around 1386, the city of Bautzen erected the city's gallows at the same location as the Preuschwitzer Weg.

For centuries the Spree was a natural obstacle to a more extensive city expansion to the west. Only with the construction of the Friedensbrücke did fragmentary beginnings of a late Wilhelminian style block perimeter development emerged at the intersection of today's Clara-Zetkin-Strasse and Dresdener Strasse. The resulting new town made up only a fraction of the urban expansion of that time, which continued mainly in the east of the city. There was also construction in the 20s and 30s. In the GDR , the new town was expanded again.

Mountain bike races are held regularly today in Humboldthain, the former Bismarckhain . There is also a large sports area here.

The southern western suburbs at the Spreebad and Humboldthain are valuable from a nature conservation point of view (Humboldthain with Spree is part of the FFH area "Spreegebiet above Bautzen") and also a much-used local recreation area for Bautzen residents. The construction of the inner city bypass west bypass, which opened in December 2013, was therefore viewed critically from this point of view.
