Nordostring , Upper Sorbian Sewjerowuchodny wobkruh ? / i , is a district of Bautzen that borders the city center to the east of Wallanlagen / Wallstraße . The tracks of the Bautzen train station form the southern border . In the east on Stieberstrasse the district borders on Ostvorstadt and on Thomas-Müntzer-Strasse on Nadelwitz . To the north is the residential area Gesundbrunnen . Audio file / audio sample

The district has over 10,000 inhabitants - more than a quarter of the city's population - and is therefore the most populous in the city. Until 2006, the district was designated as the city center ; At that time, some areas north of the old town, which had previously been part of the Gesundbrunnen district, were assigned to the northeast ring .

The name Stadtmitte was a bit misleading, as it is by no means the urban center and, since the incorporation of Kleinwelka and Salzenforst-Bolbritz, also no longer the geographical center of the city. Nevertheless, the district after the old town takes on some central tasks for the whole city. Both the train station and the central bus station can be found here at Maria-und-Martha-Kirche on August-Bebel-Platz , as well as the district office on Bahnhofstrasse.

Most of the district is characterized by urban villas with gardens and green streets, with moderate density and high quality of living. Offices have been set up on the ground floor of many villas. In the east of the area on Bertolt-Brecht-Straße and Johannes-R.-Becher-Straße there is still a small GDR new building area from the 1960s. The entrance to the Bautzen Memorial is on Weigangstrasse .

The Nordostring is one of the districts that have hardly changed their population since the fall of the Wall. In 2010, 2,314 of the 10,706 inhabitants were Protestant (21.6%), 968 were Catholic (9.0%) and 7,424 did not belong to any or any other religious community (69.3%).

After its creation, the district was mainly the residence of administrative officials and wealthier citizens. Wallstrasse was also known as the new Reichenstrasse. Even today, the entire area is one of the best residential areas in the city.
