The Maria-und-Martha-Kirche , in Upper Sorbian Cyrkej Marje a Marty , is a church belonging to the Evangelical Lutheran parish of St. Petri in Bautzen and the largest Protestant church in the city, as St. Petri Cathedral serves both denominations. It is located outside the outer city wall in the urban expansion area, which was created between 1870 and the First World War. The Bautzen bus station is located around the church on August-Bebel-Platz .
history
A Maria and Martha church in Bautzen was first mentioned in 1359 on today's Steinstrasse . In 1382 her name appears in connection with a Maria Marthen Hospital . Both the hospital and the church were destroyed by fires several times, namely in 1488, 1620 and 1686. In the course of the city's strong growth to the east from around 1870, the city council decided to demolish the old church and build a new one in it to create new, increasingly important, eastern districts.
Between 1888 and 1891 the new Maria-und-Martha-Kirche was built as a catechism and garrison church in neo-Gothic style according to plans by the Dresden architect Christian Schramm . In 1971 the sanctuary was redesigned. After severe storm damage, the 68 m high tower was simplified in 1975.
organ
The organ was built in 1985 by Hermann Eule Orgelbau Bautzen as opus 526. The design of the prospectus or housing should be reminiscent of a tree, as a symbol for the growth of the community. The slider chest instrument has 34 registers (2691 pipes) on two manuals and a pedal. The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions pneumatic.

Jackdaws in the tower
With the “Nestgucker” project, the MDR brought a German premiere to television and the Internet. Since April 2005 there have been insights into the life of a jackdaw family on the Internet around the clock , which nested at a height of 46 m at the Maria-und-Martha-Kirche. The long-term observation was regularly reported in SachsenSpiegel. Ornithologists expect new insights into the behavior of the animals from the evaluation of the over 200 recording cassettes.
